Well folks, it’s finally happened! After 160 days on YouTube, Gangnam Style has become the first video to hit 1 billion YouTube views. And despite rumors that Psy’s viral hit crossing the billion view threshold would fulfill Nostradamus’ end of the world prophecy and trigger a cataclysmic event leading to the ultimate demise of the human race, it looks like we’re all still standing.
And the fact that we’re all still standing is a good thing indeed, because Psy’s 1 billion calls for celebration…and you have to stand to do the invisible horse dance! So before you read any further, I suggest you hit play on the video below and have a little invisible horse dancing celebration of your own—Oppa Billion Style!
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I think it’s important to mention why Gangnam Style being the first video to reach 1 billion views is so huge. There are other videos on their way to reaching this milestone as well, most notably Justin Bieber’s Baby, which has just over 813 million views so far, so what is it that makes Psy’s ascent so impressive? Namely the fact that Psy accomplished this feat in just 160 days, or a little over five months. Bieber has been racking up views for 34 months—nearly seven times as long as Psy. When you take that into consideration, Psy’s success is pretty freaking mind blowing. It’s hard to grasp the power of that kind of viral spread.
It seems that with this latest milestone Psy has broken pretty much every YouTube record there is—the most-viewed video of all time, a Guinness Record for the most YouTube likes, and now the credit for starring in the first YouTube video to ever rack up views in the 10-digits. But now that Psy has broken this massive record, what’s next?
Will the Gangnam Style video continue racking up views now that the hype of the billion approach has died down or will Gangnam Style fade quietly into the background as quickly as it appeared over the Summer? What do you think? Are you sick of Gangnam Style yet? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
Oh and here’s a screen shot after the video passed 1 billion–check out the sweet mini-dancing Psy!
