SongPop developer FreshPlanet has announced the release of MoviePop on Facebook, bringing multiplayer movie trivia to the social platform.
MoviePop is most easily described as “SongPop, but with movies,” and it comes with the same multiplayer options and unlockable system that allow for playing a customized game on both Facebook or mobile devices.
In MoviePop, players go head-to-head in genre, actor or theme specific trivia rounds, identifying movie clips to earn the most points. Players are given only a few movie categories to start, but can play locked categories if their opponents choose them first.
In each game, players are shown the same five movie clips, in the same order. Clips can last up to 10 seconds, but players are encouraged with identifying clips as quickly as possible to earn more points. As players correctly identify three or more clips in a row, they’ll earn combo points, which can often be the difference between victory or defeat, in a round.
The mastery system from SongPop is also available in MoviePop, unlocking additional films in a single category as players correctly identify those in the beginning pool. These mastery markings may also help indicate how tough of a challenge one can expect against another player, as more stars would, in theory, indicate a higher knowledge in the genre.
New categories, including specialized categories like “Family Halloween” or “Gangster Movies,” are available to purchase with coins, which are earned after completing rounds, win or lose. Coins and power-ups can also be purchased with real money, offering the expected monetization streams to the experience.
MoviePop supports challenging Facebook friends, as well as random opponents, and the game allows multiple asynchronous games to be active on the same account at once. At the end of each round, players can learn more about the clips, watching movie trailers or visiting Amazon or iTunes to purchase the films, where applicable.
