Tim Pawlenty, the former Republican governor of Minnesota, is expected to announce on his Facebook page that he’s formed an exploratory committee to evaluate whether he will run for president in 2012.
His page on Facebook says that a special message will post exclusively on the social network at 3 pm eastern standard time, indicating that you need to click like in order to be able to access the announcement. After clicking, the page shows an interactive countdown to the official news event.
The move would mark the first time that an exploratory committee formation was first divulged on Facebook rather than via a press conference or direct conversation with other media outlets.
During the November election season, it became apparent that Republicans had a stronger presence on Facebook than the Democrats, and a greater proportion of the membership on the social network preferred GOP candidates, so Pawlenty’s announcement plans seem consistent with overall trends in his party.
The move by Pawlenty was first reported by NBC News, which got a tip from one of his senior advisers.
Readers, what do you think of Pawlenty’s plan to announce his exploratory committee on Facebook?
