Emerging top grossing iOS apps: Monster Galaxy, Action Movie FX and Run Roo Run

This week's iOS top grossing charts showed a little more variety than we've seen in previous weeks, although new releases were still scarce. Between old favorites battling for top spots on both the iPhone and the iPad charts, 5th Cell’s new game Run Roo Run makes a strong showing thanks to a large push from Apple, which selected the game as its iPhone and iPad game of the week. This week’s top grossing iPhone apps Monster Galaxy: The Zodiac Islands - Gaia Interactive leads our top grossing app charts this week with its free-to-play game Monster Galaxy: The Zodiac Islands. Occupying the No. 3 spot on the iPhone charts after a dramatic climb from a ranking in the low 300s a month ago (as tracked by AppData), the game is a Pokémon style collection game where players can battle and collect more than 125 different kinds of monsters. Action Movie FX - J.J Abrams’ Bad Robot Production’s spin off arm, Bad Robot Interactive, continues to lead the charts with its first app, Action Movie FX in the No. 9 position. Action Movie FX was updated on Jan. 16 to add another free FX filter, Demolition Rock. Slotomania - Caesars-owned Playtika continues to see its video slots game Slotomania perform well, with the game occupying the No. 14 spot on the top grossing iPhone charts. Free-to-play and monetizing through in-app purchases of coins, the gambling game features a variety of complicated, but cartoon-y slots. The game was last updated on Jan. 17 to enhance its performance. Zombie Farm - The Playforge’s Zombie Farm slides into our top grossing iPhone charts in the No. 19 position this week. Updated on Jan. 9 with a new in-game pet and seasonal decorations, the game is free-to-play and monetizes through in-app purchases. Run Roo Run - Last, but not least, iTunes iPhone and iPad Game of the week, Run Roo Run hops into the No. 26 position on the iPhone charts. Developed by Seattle’s 5th Cell, creators of Nintendo DS and iOS hit Scribblenauts, the $0.99 game is the only paid offering on this week’s iPhone charts, but as we’re seeing more commonly, also features in-app purchases for optional in-game items to assist the player. This week’s top grossing iPad apps The Daily - News Corp’s no-longer-iPad-exclusive newspaper The Daily kicks off our iPad charts in the No. 21 spot. Although launched on the iPad just over a year ago with a great deal of fanfare, The Daily will soon be available on select Android devices. The digital newspaper offers users a free two week trial, but requires a $0.99 a week or $39.99 a year in-app subscription if users wish to continue receiving issues. Textbooks - Kno’s Textbooks app sees a resurgence on the charts this week, rising to the No. 26 spot as students purchase textbooks for the winter semester at universities and colleges across North America. The free app allows students to download digital copies of their textbooks and add notes, pictures, annotations to the pages. The app can also automatically generate a quiz from any textbook. Textbooks is free, but the actual books must be purchased via in-app purchase after a two week free trial. Dark Parables: The Exiled Prince - Big Fish Games makes another of its regular appearance this week in the No. 27 position with its latest hidden object game, Dark Parables: The Exiled Prince. Leaning more to the adventure side than some of Big Fish Games’ other point and click style offerings, Dark Parables is free to download, but the entire game must be unlocked via an in-app purchase of either $4.99 for the standard version or $6.99 for the collectors edition. Tap Pet Hotel - Updated on Jan. 11 to add social notifications, purchase confirmations and improve load times, Pocket Gems’ top grossing charts regular Tap Pet Hotel is this week’s No. 43 top grossing iPad app. The free-to-play game tasks players with creating a world-class pet hotel and resort by collecting more than 60 different types of rooms, each which attracts a specific type of animal. Dream Zoo - Round out our rankings is Zynga’s stab at the animal-care genre Dream Zoo closes out the top grossing iPad charts this week in the No. 47 position. In Zynga’s zoo game, players can not only collect and breed animals, but can also breed animals to display specific traits, such as a spotted or swirled coat, adding to the collection element of the game. Dream Zoo monetizes via in-app purchases.
