Apple has revealed consumers broke App Store sales records during the 2015 holiday season. Specifically, in the two weeks ending Jan. 3, 2016, App Store customers spent over $1.1 billion on app downloads and in-app purchases. This figure includes back-to-back weekly records for traffic and purchases on the App Store.
Jan. 1, 2016 is now the biggest day in App Store history, with customers spending over $144 million in a single day. This breaks the previous one-day record, which was set just one week earlier, on Christmas Day in 2015.
In a statement, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, commented:
The App Store had a holiday season for the record books. We are excited that our customers downloaded and enjoyed so many incredible apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, spending over $20 billion on the App Store last year alone. We’re grateful to all the developers who have created the most innovative and exciting apps in the world for our customers. We can’t wait for what’s to come in 2016.
Since 2008, the App Store has reportedly generated close to $40 billion for developers.
The large number of app downloads over the holiday season comes as no surprise, as many consumers receive new devices as gifts, and quickly fill them with apps. A new report from Flurry Analytics recently revealed Christmas Day 2015 saw 2.2x as many app installs on Android and iOS in the U.S. as on an average day from Dec. 1, 2015 to Dec. 21, 2015.
