Advertising condoms because they prevent HIV? Go ahead. Advertising them because they prevent babies? Not so fast. In a story about a Trojan TV spot that debuts tonight, The New York Times says CBS and Fox are refusing to run the ad. The story quotes a Fox memo that says, “Contraceptive advertising must stress health-related uses rather than the prevention of pregnancy.” This decision seems especially strange when you view the spot itself, a “men are pigs” number that’s probably the most PG condom ad around. Maybe Fox, that shining beacon of American morality, is just worried that condom use could limit the chance for great television opportunities.
