Adidas is shipping colorful Red Auerbach sneakers and jerseys ($115 and $100, respectively) celebrating the late Auerbach’s legendary 1950-66 tenure as Boston Celtics’ coach, an era punctuated by the team winning eight consecutive NBA titles from 1959-66. That’s eight straight championships. Imagine such a run today? The Celtics can’t, with an 18-44 record that places them last in the Atlantic Conference. Of course, Red’s trademark cigar appears on the shoe. The team’s current coach, Doc Rivers, has no such iconography, but with a .290 winning percentage, a commemorative sneaker probably isn’t in the offing. However, he may get booted at the end of the season.
