Kevin Drew Davis is moving back to Chicago.

WPP’s “global experience innovation agency” Blast Radius has hired the digital native as its first chief creative officer in more than 6 years. Moving forward, he will lead its largest offices in Vancouver, Toronto and his hometown.

Davis previously spent nearly four years with the DDB network in Chicago, Canada and San Francisco, where he was promoted to chief creative officer last summer. At various points during his tenure with the Omnicom shop, he led the McDonald’s and Fiat Chrysler creative teams.

In explaining his move, Davis said that Blast Radius has “all the tools that CMOs are looking for,” adding, “the key is putting creative on top of it. I think it’s easier to add creative to data than the other way around.” A WPP spokesperson indicated that the agency has been looking to hire Davis for some time.

The 25-year industry veteran began his career at Austin’s GSD&M and quickly adapted to the then-new digital domain in the ’90s, serving as global digital creative director at Wieden + Kennedy before moving on to similar roles at FCB and DigitasLBi in Chicago.

“Chicago is my home,” he said, noting that his family still lives in the Windy City and that he got to know many Blast Radius leaders while working there. In the new role, he will lead accounts including Lavazza, Huawei and BMW Canada, for which the WPP shop serves as digital agency of record.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Kevin to the Chicago office,” said a statement from Blast Radius USA managing director Lothar Boensch, who will be his partner moving forward. “He’s a proven creative leader with deep roots in social, digital, data and experience design—exactly what our clients need in order to achieve the awareness and recognition they’re looking for.”

The network’s Canadian president Michel Sergio added, “Kevin’s career spans brand communications, digital and traditional, which makes him a ‘triple threat’ and the perfect fit for our clients who are hoping to make maximum impact with their consumers in new and unconventional ways.”

Blast Radius has not employed a chief creative officer since 2011, when former CCO Chip Reingold left to lead brand experience agency Cibo in San Francisco. Davis begins his new job on March 30.
