YouTube to escape the clutches of the PC

Lgphone_2 LG Electronics has signed a deal with Google to develop a special YouTube mobile phone that would allow users to create, upload, view and share video clips without ever using a PC, according to TechCrunch. The product will ship before year’s end and appears to be LG’s gambit to take on Apple’s iPhone, which allows its owners to view—though not create—YouTube videos on their handsets. The LG offering furthers my theory that every human being is now a node on the worldwide communications network, constantly generating and consuming media. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’ll be first in line to buy that LG phone and upload some hilarious footage of iPhone returns (let’s face it, Safari sucks) before I even leave the store. I’m open to banner, search and pre-roll sponsorships. (Cigarette ads are OK, but please, no dairies.) Sure, the ROI’s tenuous, as I really need to get a life and have no actual friends to share content with. But who cares? We’re all well on the way to becoming a truly captive global audience, crafting clips for our own amusement and generating ads designed to sell products to ourselves.
