Shakin’ it with one of Geico’s favorites

Shack Last night I went out on the town, catching Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers in downtown Greensboro, N.C. They put on an amazing show, with frontman JD’s hyperactivity backed by the band’s high-octane mix of punk, bluegrass, rockabilly and polka. Not only are the Shack Shakers one of the best live bands I’ve seen in ages, but they’re a band many an AdFreak reader has probably already heard. “CB Song,” the second track from Cockadoodledon’t, was featured in a Geico ad a few years back. According to JD, an ad exec (presumably from The Martin Agncy) caught a performance of theirs in Virginia Beach and made them an offer on the spot. (The band explained on its Web site: “Heck, we’ll hawk car insurance. ... It’s something everybody needs, right? It’s not like we’re plugging Massengill or Skoal or something. So any smarmy claim of us ‘selling out’ will be sent directly to the ‘circular file.’ ”) I didn’t get a chance to ask JD how that same song ended up on the seventh episode of CBS’s The Unit, but I’m sure it’s a similar story. They’re that good.
