The great thing about breeding pandas in captivity, it seems, is that
they then breed an endless supply of marketing opportunities and tchotchkes.
According to this story from the AP, Tai Shan, the five-month-old cub at the
National Zoo, has generated $27,000 in online sales in the last month of such
must-haves as sweatshirts depicting Tai Shan and his Mom. (Last year, online
sales of zoo merchandise totaled $24,000.) The best news for the National Zoo
is that the marketing of Tai Shan has only just begun; his “coming-out”
to the public happened just yesterday and the zoo is about to start selling Tai Shan
mousepads, key chains and so forth.
