Vox Media Studio Produces Baseball-themed Web Video Show for Jeep Wade Boggs hosts SB Nation series focused on ballpark workers

SB Nation's new video series, A Day's Work, has several interesting things going for it: baseball legend Wade Boggs, an insider's look at unique baseball stadiums, and the workers who do odd jobs around the ballparks.

It also has a major corporate sponsor in Jeep. In fact, A Day's Work—the first video series produced by Vox Media's in-house creative services arm—was conceived specifically to promote the Jeep Patriot.

The automaker was "looking to do something interesting and fresh, and we took that root of an idea and [ended] up turning it into this series with SB Nation (Vox's sports site)," said Vox creative director Chad Mumm.

The eight-part series, which will run on SBNation.com and its network of baseball sites, features Boggs as host touring various stadiums and actually working with the people who keep the games going. In the first episode, Boggs visits Miami's Marlins Park, where he helps clean the aquarium that sits behind home plate. In episode two, Boggs travels to Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field to meet with the park's top groundskeeper.

Vox views the show as a Dirty Jobs for the sports world, and Boggs makes a charismatic host. "He's got an aura about him that's really fun," Mumm said.

The Jeep Patriot is embedded in the series: Boggs rides to the ballparks in the car and there are several close-up shots of the vehicle at the top of the episodes.

Given Jeep's deep investment in the series, does the series fall on the side of branded entertainment or more traditional editorial? "I would say it's right in the middle," Mumm said, adding that there are talks of a second season.

A Day's Work is a bit different from the last Vox series covered on VideoWatch. Polygon's Human Angle was sponsored by Internet Explorer and explored less publicized segments of the video game world. That series, according to Mike Hadgis, Vox's senior director of sales and partnerships, would have likely been produced with or without a sponsor. Which isn't to say A Day's Work couldn't exist on its own, he added, but Jeep's interest really made the series happen.
