Supporters of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton Both Loved a Canceled NBC Drama

The similarities begin and end there

We finally found something that supporters of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton can actually agree on, and it's a canceled NBC drama.

TiVo conducted a study of its PowerWatch panel, an opt-in group of about 30,000 TiVo households, to determine the viewing habits for supporters of the two presumptive nominees for November's presidential election. TiVo polled these households and asked them who they would vote for if the election was held today, then analyzed their TV data for March to see what networks and prime-time series (prime-time viewership only) they consumed vs. the average TiVo household.

While some of the data ran down party lines—Clinton backers favored MSNBC while Trump supporters watched Fox News—there was one constant: Supporters of both really like Mysteries of Laura. The Debra Messing drama, which NBC canceled earlier this month, ranked among the top five broadcast series that Clinton and Trump backers were more likely to watch, though it wasn't the top choice for either.

For Clinton supporters, it should come as no surprise as their top five all featured female leads, with The CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend coming out on top. The other four:

  • The Good Wife
  • The Mysteries of Laura
  • Madam Secretary
  • Telenovela

For those supporting Trump, Fox's Rosewood was the most popular show, with CBS taking up much of the others:

  • Limitless
  • NCIS: New Orleans
  • NCIS
  • The Mysteries of Laura

Over on cable, Clinton supporters top series was BET's Kevin Hart-led reality spoof Real Husbands of Hollywood, with the other four being MSNBC series:

  • The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell
  • The Rachel Maddow Show
  • With All Due Respect
  • All in With Chris Hayes

Trump backers were a bit more eclectic with shows like Destination America's Most Haunted and Cooking Channel's Restaurant: Impossible. The other three were:

  • Rehab Addict: Detriot
  • Steve J & Joseline Go Hollywood
  • Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace

The other cable networks that were most likely to be watched by Clinton supporters were WGNA, Viceland and TCM, while Trump backers watched Fox Business, Destination America and, yes, Nick Jr. GSN ranked second among cable networks for both.
