Zynga is celebrating the fifth anniversary of Words with Friends with some big stats and news for fans. As many as 55 million matches are being played at any moment, with Apple previously rating the game as one of the best free apps of all time. Throughout this year of celebrations, Zynga will add new content to the game in the form of Weekly Challenges, among other updates.

More than half of Words with Friends players have said the game has helped strengthen their relationships with friends and family. To celebrate, players will be given new word-themed Anniversary Editions of the app, which are presented as Weekly Challenges from word experts and “surprise guest word curators.”

On iOS, players can now experience the game with a redesigned user interface for iOS 7, and now have the ability to resign during an opponents’ turn.

From now until February 1, players can also take the game’s third annual Valentine’s Day survey, with this year’s theme being “Love Letters.” Players can share their stories of finding love or friendship within the app, or simply share their thoughts on what makes the game so great for them.

Words with Friends is available on iOS and Android, among other platforms. Check back soon to follow the game on AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.
