Yahoo Tosses More Old Products in Effort to Narrow Focus

yahoo, email, internet, marissa mayer, In its second laundry list of product closures since Marissa Mayer began her effort to turn the company around, Yahoo said today that it would close some of its Mail and Messenger apps for feature phones and older versions of its desktop Mail app.

“We want to bring you experiences that inspire and entertain you every day. That means taking a hard look at all of our products to make sure they are still central to your daily habits,” Jay Rossiter, executive vice president for platforms wrote on the company’s blog.

Users who had chosen to continue using Yahoo Mail Classic even after Yahoo launched an updated version of its once pack-leading email platform will be forced to adopt the newer version.

Also on the closures list are SMS Alerts, Deals, the events app Upcoming and the youth content platform Yahoo Kids.

In March, Yahoo announced its first round of closures linked to Mayer’s efforts to hone the company’s focus. As it has struggled to remain relevant, Yahoo has tended toward cluttered design and a long list of products, some with passionate user bases, and others whose users have perhaps simply forgotten to leave.

The closures announced today will take effect at the end of April, except for the shuttering of older versions of Yahoo Mail, which will occur on June 3.
