Unruly’s Viral Spiral Tracks The Most Viral Ads All The Way Back To 2006

By Megan O'Neill

Social video sharing and online video advertising are exploding, and if you don’t believe it just check out Unruly Media’s Viral Spiral!  The Viral Spiral is an interactive visualization of the exponential growth of video sharing over the past five years.  It features the most-shared ads from today all the way back to 2006, and tracks the number of shares on Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere in real time.

We’ve included a screenshot of Unruly’s Viral Spiral below, but you’ll want to click to check it out on the Unruly Media site for the full effect.  The number of shares for each of the videos is tracked in real time and you can also scroll over each bubble to see the videos play and click to watch them in their entirety.

As you can see, back in 2006 it only took a couple hundred thousand shares for an ad to be considered “viral.”  Today’s top online video ads are being shared millions of times.  It is important to note that we’re not just talking about views here—we’re talking about viewers actually taking the time out to share the videos with their social networks on Twitter, Facebook and blogs.  The most-shared video of 2011 has been Volkswagen’s ‘The Force,’ with over 4.9 million shares to date.  Unruly predicts that the first ad to hit 10 million views will potentially debut in early 2012.
