Twitter Nears Geolocation

With the number of tweets exploding over the past year—University of Iowa researcher Alessio Signorini told The New York Times there were 2.4 million tweets per day in January, and that number skyrocketed to 26 million in October—Twitter has been taking steps to enable its users to find the most relevant tweets.

The next tweak on tap: Geolocation, the social-networking site told the Times, possibly in the next few weeks.

An example: When the shootings at Fort Hood occurred last week, Twitter limited search results to tweets from within 15 miles of Killeen, Texas, near the Army post, to filter out people nationwide tweeting the same information over and over and enable users to get a pulse on what was truly happening in the region, the Times reported.
