2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil kicks off Thursday (June 12), and Facebook will take soccer fans through the championship game July 13 with its new Trending World Cup hub, aggregating the best content related to the tournament in one place.
Facebook said in a Newsroom post that Trending World Cup can be accessed via the URL www.facebook.com/worldcup or by clicking on World Cup in its Trending section, located on the right-hand side of News Feed.
Or if users’ friends are watching specific matches, clicking on their posts will bring up Trending World Cup.
Trending World Cup includes:
- Scores and highlights from matches.
- A feed with real-time posts from friends, as well as from relevant players and teams.
- An interactive map displaying where around the world fans of top players are located.
Facebook also announced that starting with opening day of the tournament Thursday, users can share which matches they are watching by tapping the smiley icon while creating status updates and selecting “watching.”
Finally, the social network said posts from The Ref — described as “Facebook’s ‘official’ official of the tournament,” and offering commentary and updates — will be a part of Trending World Cup.
