Postings about midwestern tornadoes have been hitting Facebook at a rate of about 20 posts every second since this weekend.

Updates about the latest rash of tornadoes hitting the midwestern portion of the U.S. have been hitting Facebook at a rate of about 20 posts every second.

A fair number of posts since this weekend have included information about loved ones living in the region, while another subset of postings continue to warn about additional storms expected to hit the area.

These posts fit a much larger pattern on Facebook: Whenever natural disasters and other types of emergencies knock down phone lines or wreak havoc on other forms of communication, people turn to the social network to find out about loved ones in the affected areas.
