Fans of The Onion, including Tom Hanks, Arianna Huffington and Gayle King, have taken things into their own hands to let the Pulitzer board know that it’s about time that The Onion was awarded a Pulitzer Prize.  These celebrity videos have just hit YouTube as part of a new campaign from Americans for Fairness in Awarding Journalism Prizes (AFAJP) that has got Onion fans up in arms, submitting videos to tell the Pulitzer board that their bias against The Onion has got to stop!

The AFAJP campaign comes just in time for a major milestone in The Onion’s career—their 1,000th issue.  The description on a video explaining the campaign, aptly titled ‘Demand an #OnionPullitzer’, hosted on The Onion’s YouTube page, explains in the description, “This week, The Onion celebrates its 1,000th issue.  We are proud, not only of our journalistic accomplishments, but also of the high praise heaped upon us by our readers.  While we normally disdain any acknowledgement of the unwashed masses who keep our advertisers in business, we are humbled by the efforts of AFAJP to recognize our unique and valuable coverage with a demand for a Pulitzer Prize.  If you feel similarly, we urge you to support this selfless and wise organization.”

Fans of The Onion are invited to submit a 30-second video telling the Pulitzer board why they think The Onion deserves a Pulitzer Prize on the AFAJP website.  Videos can be found easily with a YouTube search for #OnionPulitzer.

All sorts of people have been uploading their support for The Onion, including students, auto mechanics, computer programmers, lawyers, talk show host Gayle King, and even Mikheil Saakashvili, the President of Georgia (seriously!).  But among the most popular Onion fans that have showed their support are Tom Hanks and Arianna Huffington.

Tom and Arianna don’t just show their support, they flat out threaten the Pulitzer board.  Tom Hanks says, “If our Onion does not receive this year’s P2 I will search you down, each and every one of you who is responsible for this great injustice.”

Arianna Huffington takes things a step further with her threat.  She says that, “If The Onion does not receive a Pulitzer, I will make sure that every link on The Huffington Post goes directly to the Columbia Journalism School website and cripples it!”

How do you like them apples, Pulitzer board?  Let us know what you think about the campaign, and why you think The Onion deserves a Pulitzer, in the comments below.  Oh, and you can read more about the campaign on the most trusted news source–The Onion!
