Twitter has been notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to giving solid user numbers, but new stats from BI Intelligence shed some light on exactly how many people are tweeting, retweeting and @mentioning their hearts out on a regular basis.
According to a newly released chart from BI Intelligence, Twitter boasts 18 percent of the US Internet population as its user base.
The chart breaks down the number of Twitter users by gender (a slightly higher proportion of men than women are on Twitter), ethnicity (28 percent of hispanics are Twitter users), age group (30% of 18 to 29 year olds are on Twitter compared to just 5 percent of those aged 65+), income (the wealthy seem to really like Twitter, with 22% of those making more than $75,000 signing up) and whether they’re urban (21%), suburban (18%), or rural (11%).
Now, 18 percent is nowhere near Facebook’s numbers, with a total user count of about 1.11 billion. Still, for a social network that started as a 140-character SMS service, 18 percent of US internet users is nothing to sneeze at! And you can bet this number will see a healthy boost when Twitter files its IPO and sees even more mainstream media coverage.
