What do Zach Galifianakis, Lisa Kudrow, David Wain and Felicia Day have in common? They’re all nominees in the 2010 Streamy Awards, an annual awards ceremony dedicated to honoring excellence and originality in web television. The second annual Streamy Awards will take place in LA this Sunday, April 11, and will also stream live on the Streamy Awards’ website.
The Streamy Awards were started last year as a grassroots effort to recognize the talent behind web television. The awards run in conjunction with the International Academy of Web Television, a non-profit organization spearheaded by online entertainment professionals. The Academy selects all the nominees for the Streamys from a pool of public submissions.
The Streamys are the closest thing that web television producers, actors, directors, artists and craftsmen have to the Oscars. The show is set to take place in the Orpheum Theatre in downtown LA, complete with big-name stars, fancy clothes, presenters opening envelopes and more. Awards include Best Comedy Web Series, Best Drama Web Series, Best Animated Web Series, Best Male and Female Actor in a Comedy and Drama Series, Best Vlogger and more. Nominees can be viewed on the Streamy Awards website. Actor-comedian Paul Scheer will be hosting the show.
In preparation for the big awards ceremony on Sunday, 2010 Web TV Week kicked off at the beginning of this week. Web TV Week includes a variety of events, including last night’s Streamys Craft Awards, preview shows, web series premieres and launch parties, all culminating in the big show at the end of the week and, of course, the after parties.
If you are in LA and are interested in attending the show you’ll have to put your name on the waiting list. However, if you can’t get in to see the awards at the Orpheum, the show will be streaming live at Streamys.org. The show begins on Sunday at 5:30pm (PST) / 8:30pm (EST).
