Pinterest 101: How to Pin from a Page with Multiple Images

By Devon Glenn

Using Pinterest for the first time can be daunting. If you find a picture you like on a website, how do you pin just one picture among all the others on the page? What if you want to pin two pictures?

New York Times Magazine design director Arem Duplessis gave our sibling blog, Unbeige, a sneak peak of the four-part cover he and his team had planned for the 2012 innovations issue. It was hard to pick a favorite among the four beautiful designs, which made the spread a perfect subject for a tutorial on how to select pictures from a website and put them into a board on a Pinterest page. Here’s how it works.

Option 1: Do it Manually

Step 1. To pin an image on Pinterest, copy the page address from the search bar (highlight the entire line, hold down the “Ctrl” button and hit “C”). Once on Pinterest, hit the “Add +” button on the navigation bar at the top right of the page.

Step 2. This brings up a new window. Choose add a pin. (You can also create the board first. When you want to put several pictures onto a board, either way is fine.)

Step 3. From there, take the URL and paste (“Ctrl + “V”) into the empty bar.

Step 4. When you hit “find images,” Pinterest scans the entire page and finds all of the images on the site. This will include some that are not relevant to your board. (In this case, the first image that came up was an ad for an upcoming event.)

Step 5. By clicking “next,” you can flip through the pictures until you find what you’re looking for, similar to Facebook’s status update tool. (Here, there were two magazine covers per image, so I chose the one with the robo-cat and the monster slide.)

Step 6. If you don’t have a board yet, use the pull-down menu to find the blank form where you can type in the name of the new board where the pictures will go.

Step 7. Hit the red “pin it” button.

The next step is to go back and pin another image, repeating the same process. (This time, the board was already created, so I found the photo I wanted, selected “NY Times Magazine Cover Preview” from the board menu, and hit “pin it.”)

You should have a board that includes all of your selected pictures, with the last one you entered coming out on top. Click “edit” to switch it out for a new picture.

Option 2: Use the “Pin It” Button

Step 1. Install the button using Pinterest’s instructions on how to put a “pin it” button on your browser. You can click on it any time you want to add a picture from the Web on Pinterest.

Step 2. A new tab will open with all of the available images at one glance.

Step 3. Hover over the one you want and click “pin it.”

Repeat steps 6 and 7 from Option #1.
