As the National Football League season kicks off tonight, it appears that more Facebook users are posting about star quarterback Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos than their opponent, defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens.
Facebook provided statistics to Sports Business Daily, showing that Manning is the most-talked about athlete in tonight’s matchup by a wide margin. Sports Business Daily noted that Manning has generated three times as much buzz as the four most-talked about players: Ravens running back Ray Rice, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker and Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata.
Facebook’s data also showed that 29 percent of the Broncos Facebook fans based in the U.S. also like Subway, followed by Dr Pepper (25 percent). Meanwhile, 41 percent of the Ravens’ U.S. Facebook fans are also fans of Walmart, followed by the official page of recently-retired Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis (39 percent).
PageData shows that the Broncos, as a team, are gaining more Facebook fans and have more people talking about them on the social network. Both team pages have a little more than 1.5 million fans, but the Broncos are growing faster.
