STUDY: Facebook Users Aren’t Facebook-Exclusive

PewMultipleSocialNetworks650It’s no surprise that social network users are multitaskers, but according to new research from Pew Research Center, 52 percent of online adults currently use two or more social networks, up from 42 percent in 2013.

Pew also said the percentage of Facebook users who also use some combination of Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn has also risen considerably since August 2013, writing:

Facebook remains the most popular platform for those using just one social media site — fully 79 percent of those who use just one site report using Facebook. As in 2013, a significant majority of Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn users say they also use Facebook, more than any other site. At the low end, 86 percent of LinkedIn users are also on Facebook. At the high end, 94 percent of Instagram users use Facebook (Instagram’s parent company).

The proportion of Facebook users who also use another platform increased significantly since August 2013 for each platform. That is, there are more Facebook users this year who also use Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn than there were last year. Similarly, there are more LinkedIn users who use Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest than there were in 2013. Finally, there are more Pinterest users on Instagram and LinkedIn than in 2013. These increases likely reflect the overall trend toward multiple-site use described above.

One of the largest shifts Pew found in terms of Facebook users was on the senior side, with 56 percent of online adults 65 and older, or 31 percent of all seniors, using Facebook, marking the first time the 50 percent mark was topped.

Other Facebook statistics from Pew included:

  • 70 percent of Facebook users engage with the site daily, up from 63 percent in 2013, and 45 percent do so several times per day.
  • Facebook users’ median friends total was 155, and respondents estimated that a median number of 50 of those were “actual” friends.
  • 93 percent are friends with family members other than parents and children.
  • 91 percent are Facebook friends with current “actual” friends.
  • 87 percent are connected to friends from their pasts, such as classmates from high school or college.
  • 58 percent are connected to work colleagues.
  • 45 percent are friends with their parents.
  • 43 percent are friends with their children.
  • 39 percent said they are connected to people whom they have never met in-person.
  • 36 percent are friends with their neighbors.
  • 65 percent of Facebook users frequently or sometimes share, post or comment on Facebook.

Pew’s findings on Instagram included:

  • 26 percent of adult Internet users, or 21 percent of the entire adult population, use the Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network, up from 17 percent in late 2013.
  • 53 percent of those aged 18 through 29 use Instagram, up from 37 percent in 2013.
  • 49 percent of Instagram users access the network daily, with 32 percent saying they do so several times per day.
  • 24 percent of respondents said they check Instagram weekly, and 26 percent said their visits were less frequent.
