OverDrive, a company that powers eBook distribution for schools and libraries, reported today that its number of registered user sessions was up 93 percent, in 2012 as compared to 2011. According to a new report from OverDrive, the company had 192 million registered visitor sessions last year, which was a huge spike from the prior year. According to the report, OverDrive Media Console’s app had 16 million downloads in 2012 and mobile visits now represent 47 percent of all visits.
OverDrive also reported that 70 million digital titles were checked out from its platform in 2012 and that 2.7 billion digital pages were viewed, which was up 65 percent from 2011. The OverDrive catalog, which is available at a network of more than 22,000 libraries and schools, now includes 1 million pieces of media. This includes eBooks, audiobooks, and music and video titles, 300,000 of which were added in 2012.
“As a result of the continued expansion of OverDrive’s library service platform and the addition of over 300,000 titles, including Harry Potter and other bestsellers, digital libraries saw record traffic last year,” explained Shannon Lichty, manager of library partner services at OverDrive, in a statement.
