Facebook To Discuss News Feed, Ranking Algorithm At Aug. 6 Press Event

One of the most expressed frustrations with Facebook, by both users and brands, is how the social network determines which content to display in users’ News Feeds. A press event set for 10 a.m. PT Tuesday, Aug. 6, at its headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., is aimed at clearing up some of the mystery.

Facebook said in an invite to reporters in the U.S.:

We will be talking about News Feed, and taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed. We’ll be discussing a specific update to organic ranking that’s coming up.

According to TechCrunch, the event will also be live-streamed to Facebook’s offices in London, and the invite sent to European reporters also said:

We’ll also be talking about what’s coming next for News Feed.

Despite Facebook’s introduction of different feed options with its revamped News Feed, which it introduced in March, and repeated attempts to explain the algorithm that populates its most prominent section, News Feed remains a source of discontent, as users complain about content that is selected or not select to be served to them, and brands vent about reaching only a fraction of their users.
