Twitter is hard at work adding new features to #newTwitter, and they’re forging a path that few social media platforms go down when they’re large enough: web-based functionality. Sure, Facebook and iPods have their own basic functionality, but they’re wide open to third-party apps. Twitter, on the other hand, is showing its cards a bit with its latest slew of partnerships and new media integration.
It’s clear that Twitter wants people to stay on Twitter.com rather than use a third-party platform. The #newTwitter is the beginning of a robust expansion of Twitter’s functionalities, and a lot can be done within that right-hand side panel.
Late yesterday Twitter announced five new partnerships that would expand the multimedia aspect of #newTwitter. As it stands, users can already view videos from YouTube and Flickr, as well as listen to iTunes previews – now there are a slew of new photo, video and music sources that can embed directly within Twitter. The partnerships include:
- blip.tv – watch more than 50,000 indie web shows from within Twitter
- Instagram – view mobile photos
- Rdio – members of Rdio can hear full-length Tweeted songs, while non-members will hear a 30 second preview
- SlideShare – view and share slideshow presentations from the right-side panel
- Dipdive – watch videos, view photos and art from Dipdive’s artist community
Announced on the Twitter blog, these new features certainly nod to Twitter’s desire to encourage users to tweet directly from Twitter.com.
