MTV VMAs Beat Jersey Shore As Most Social TV Program Of All Time

By Megan O'Neill

Did you watch the MTV Video Music Awards over the weekend?  If so, did you tweet about them or post your thoughts about the awards show on Facebook?  If you did, you aren’t alone.  Over 1.2 million comments were shared by over 559,000 people, making the VMAs the most social TV program of all time!

The social activity during Sunday night’s award show had way more social buzz around it than Jersey Shore, who broke the record for the most social TV show of all time earlier this month.  Jersey shore received close to 300,000 comments from 190,892 unique viewers.  The VMAs more than doubled that.

Of course, it should be noted that the VMAs ran for twice as long as a typical episode of Jersey Shore.  However, even when that’s taken into account, last night’s shindig definitely saw a lot more social action than America’s favorite guidos and guidettes.

As you can see from the SocialGuide report below, MTV took all three top spots for the daily Social 100 on Sunday, August 28, 2011.  The top spot went to the MTV Video Music Awards, the second to Jersey Shore and the third to the VMA Pre-Show.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that a large percentage of the social media action surrounding the show probably had something to do with Lady Gaga showing up as Jo Calderone…but maybe that’s just me.

Are you surprised by the VMAs overtaking Jersey Shore as the most social TV program of all time?  What future television event do you think will surpass the VMAs as the most social?  I’m going with the Super Bowl.
