i.TV for the iPhone and iPad has been a well-regarded free TV guide app. It provides local TV show listings, the ability to bookmark favorite shows, schedule TiVo DVR recordings, search for shows online (iTunes, Hulu and Netflix), access to reference information about shows on iMDB and Wikipedia, and news about shows. The current version of i.TV for iOS has a 4.0 average customer rating (out of a possible 5). The good news for people using Android smartphones and tablets is that i.TV is heading to that platform. Even better news is that there is a public beta that can be downloaded and tested right now.
i.TV for Android beta now available
You need to change a setting on an Android device to allow downloading apps from sources other than Google’s Android Market Place. You can find this setting in three taps.
Settings->Applications->Unknown sources (check box)
The i.TV for Android beta was stable and responsive when I tried it on an LG DoublePlay smartphone. The only week point is the app’s use of AOLTV.com as its sole news source. Selecting a news item launched’s Android’s default browser and displays the AOLTV.com news item in a desktop viewing format that is difficult to read comfortably on a relatively small smartphone display. That said, double tapping a text column in Android’s browser performs a good reformatting of the content.
