How To Track All Your Facebook Statistics For Free

By Nick O'Neill Comment

There are a handful of startups offering companies with tools to monitor and manage Facebook pages, but what if you could download a tool that offers many of the paid services developed by others for free? ThinkUp does just that.

ThinkUp describes itself as “a free, open source web application that captures your posts, tweets, replies, retweets, friends, followers, and links on social networks like Twitter and Facebook.”

I ran into the service when browsing through Github earlier this week. The project, which was first built by Gina Trapani (founder of Lifehacker), is comparable to a wordpress for social media statistics.

You don’t need to pay to use it, can host it on your own servers, and there’s a huge community of developers that are helping contribute to the documentation and source code.

Right now the product is still in beta, but each month they release a new version or two. As one of the most widely followed projects on Github, I’d have to say that this project has legs.

While many social media monitoring solutions exist, this is definitely the one for any company who has full-time development resources which they can assign to focus on building their social media monitoring tools. It reminds me of Ning back when they used to let you download it and install the service for free on other servers.

Unfortunately that came to a screeching halt once the company decided that it needed to make money, but it was fun while it lasted! ThinkUp is different, though, as it’s being supported by the non-profit organization, Expert Labs. That means donations, not profits, will keep this puppy alive and kicking.

When I hopped on Internet Relay Chat, there were 23 members in the #ThinkUp chat room available for conversation. While Gina Trapani appears to be the primary developer who’s keeping the project alive, there are plenty of other code contributors who are submitting commits on Github.

While large companies will feel much more comfortable simply hiring an outside organization to handle their social media monitoring services, government agencies, non-profits, and smaller businesses will find this project to be priceless.
