Javelin Games has challenged players to become master swordsmen in its side-scrolling battle game Heroes of the Sword. Players choose from three character classes, and then take to battle in both single-player and multiplayer modes, defeating enemies using a combination of both keyboard and mouse controls.
The focus of Heroes of the Sword is on multiplayer battles, which are available in three main modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag. In each, players are presented with 2D side-scrolling environments with multiple vertical levels.
Player movement, power activation and more is controlled with the keyboard, while players can use their mouse to click and drag on the screen to aim their sword’s slashing motion. When players have the available mana, they can activate powers, like an attack that damages everyone in a nearby radius, as one example. Players can also collect throwing stars for ranged attacks, and will find health potions, weapons and more randomly scattered throughout the battlefield.
Heroes of the Sword also offers a level-based single-player mode, but these levels are difficult to complete at first, and encourage players to toy around in multiplayer until their character is stronger.
As players complete mulitplayer matches or single-player levels, they’ll earn experience points and coins which can be spent on new weapons or magical powers in the shop. Players can browse swords, axes, hammers and more, depending on their personal play style, while spells come in both destructive and restoration varieties.
Heroes of the Sword is now available to play for free on Facebook. The game is currently gaining in popularity, sitting at 283,000 monthly active players, according to AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.
