Yesterday we shared the news that Twitter has introduced the ability to create custom timelines.
Custom timelines are a new type of timeline that you control by selecting, a la carte, the individual tweets from the accounts you want to include.
Here’s a handy step-by-step guide to creating a custom Twitter timeline.
First, know that you need to have a TweetDeck account.
It’s free to sign up, and you can use the web version, Chrome app or desktop version.
If you’re already a TweetDeck user, you’ll see this message the next time you sign in:
Second, once in TweetDeck, you can create a new column that’s specified as a “Custom Timeline” either by clicking the “Custom timelines” button on the left sidebar, or clicking “Add Column,” then selecting “Custom timeline.” You can also use the keyboard shortcut “A” to add a new column.
You can then name your custom timeline and add a 160-character description.
Third, start adding tweets to your new custom timeline by dragging individual tweets’ move icon and dropping them into the timeline column.
Alternatively, add tweets to your custom timeline by choosing the “Add to custom timeline” action in the More Actions menu, which is symbolized by the ellipses, beneath Tweet To, Follow, Send a DM, and Add or Remove from Lists. This can also be triggered by the keyboard shortcut “C.”
Fourth, to remove tweets from your custom timeline just click the “X” icon on any of the tweets in your column, or use that same More Actions menu and choose Remove from Custom Timeline.
Fifth, if you want to share your custom timeline, click on the icon to the right of your Twitter profile icon at the top of the column and select Share. You can embed the timeline, view it on Twitter.com, or tweet about it and share it that way in a link.
The ability to create custom timelines is rolling out over the next several days to TweetDeck for web, Chrome and PC, and will be coming soon to the Mac app.
