Senator David Norris is the current frontrunner for the Irish presidency – a post that is popularly elected but has mostly symbolic powers like the British monarchy. The Guardian newspaper reports that he has acknowledged a Facebook campaign for persuading him to run in the first place.
Senator Norris told The Guardian he put his name forward only after hearing of a Facebook group with nearly 1,000 members calling for him to stand.
