Mobile application developers are confused about how to best use Facebook’s social graph, which improves Google’s position in that sector.
An International Data Corporation survey of 2,173 Appcelerator developers from across the globe found that the ability to easily integrate Google assets led 39 percent of respondents to say Google was a bigger factor in their 2012 social strategies than Facebook.
Google assets that mobile developers want to integrate include search, YouTube, Gmail, and maps.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s social graph continued to mystify developers, with notifications, status updates, and authentication outranking it in terms of their social priorities.
IDC Vice President of Mobile and Connected Consumer Platforms Scott Ellison said:
This translates into a big competitive opportunity for Google — and potential significant risk for Facebook — especially because developers perceive Google as innovating faster than Facebook.
Add to that, Google itself is clearly gearing up to leverage its network effects, one example being the alteration of its privacy policies to allow sharing of user data across its services.
Other findings from the survey by Appcelerator and IDC include:
- 79 percent of mobile developers plan to integrate HTML5 into their apps in 2012, a higher percentage than originally forecast in the fourth quarter of last year.
- 53.5 percent of respondents said they are focused on accelerating their mobile strategies, up from 27.4 percent in 2010, and the respective numbers for those focused on innovating their mobile apps were 16.9 percent and 9.2 percent.
- Interest in Windows Phone 7 is on its way up, with the platform placing third, behind Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, while RIM’s BlackBerry platform is heading in the opposite direction.
- Location and notifications are the top two services developers plan to integrate into their apps.
