Facebook has been big on dogfooding its employees, and it appears the latest round came when the company shut off its website internally, forcing employees to only use their mobile applications. Facebook Product Manager Josh Williams, formerly CEO of Gowalla, told attendees at South by Southwest that Facebook blocked some employees’ access to Facebook.com at the campus for a while in an effort to get them to communicate using the native mobile apps.
Williams talked about this dogfooding at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, according to Fast Company:
To be honest, a couple of weeks ago, myself and a number of other product managers had access to our website internally shut off. Basically it forced us to use only mobile devices for a week … It forced us to say, “Hey, we have these features that exist in one place but not in another, and we have to remedy.”
This is not the first time Facebook has taken this route. In November, Facebook began “Droidfooding” its employees, encouraging them to turn in their iPhones for Android devices to brainstorm ways the company could improve its Android interface.
