Facebook Isn’t Just For The Young

Who is on Facebook? That’s what Web monitoring service Pingdom wanted to know. We know that Facebook users span all ages, from teens to seniors, but Pingdom wanted to find out what the demographic breakdown is on the social network (as well as other social media sites). The company found out that most Facebook users are actually 35 or older.

Note: These statistics reference U.S. users.

Pingdom recently completed a comprehensive demographic study of several social networks, and not just the big ones such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Hi5, deviantART, LiveJournal, and a plethora of other sites were also included in the study.

The company released a colorful infographic detailing the age breakdown among various social media sites:

Pingdom noted that 65 percent of Facebook users are 35 or older. The average Facebook user is 40.5 years old, the third most senior (after LinkedIn and Yelp). Compared with a previous survey Pingdom did two-and-a-half years ago, the age of the average Facebook user has gone up two years.

Additionally, Facebook and Twitter share the same gender breakdown: 60 percent female, 40 percent male.

Readers: Are you surprised to see the age and gender breakdown for Facebook users?
