Emerging top paid iOS apps: Scramble With Friends, Puzzlejuice and monkeys

New games performed strongly this week, with offerings from Zynga, independent developer Asher Vollmer, Game Oven Studios and Hutch Games all making solid debuts. Educational apps showed strongly on the iPad charts, with not one but two entries from New York City-based THUP Games making the charts.

Scramble With Friends – The paid version of Zynga’s latest ‘With Friends’ title hits No. 1 this week after going on sale for $0.99. A mobile, asynchronous take on Boggle where players compete in a two minute race to find as many words as possible, Scramble With Friends awards points based on the Scrabble scores of the words players find. Smash Cops - London-based Hutch Games’ new game Smash Cops hits No. 8 this week. A driving game focusing heavily on destruction and mayhem, players take the role of police chasing down dangerous criminals by any means possible. The app costs $2.99 but also includes in-app purchases.

ProCamera – Jens Daemgen’s Pro Camera holds the No. 20 spot on the paid iOS charts after a Chinese New Year discount boosted sales. The app gives experienced camera users the ability to manually control focus, exposure and white balance and includes features such as rapid shutter mode and volume triggers. Users can also edit their photos and upload them to Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox and Flickr. ProCamera costs $2.99.

Pocket First Aid & CPR from the American Heart Association – Moving down to No. 30, we find Pocket First Aid & CPR from the American Heart Association. Developed by Jive Media, the app gives basic instructions for first aid and CPR and includes 34 videos and 46 illustrations. Pocket First Aid & CPR costs $3.99.

Puzzlejuice – Independent developer Asher Vollmer’s new game Puzzlejuice closes out our charts in the No. 34 position this week. Advertising itself cheekily as a game that will “punch your brain in the face”, Puzzlejuice combines three common puzzle game elements — players must slot differently shaped blocks together, and upon completion a row of blocks turns into a row of letters, which can only be cleared out by creating words. Players can also group like colors to create letters. The game is currently on sale for $0.99.

This week’s top paid iPad apps

Fingle – This week’s iPad charts start outside the top 10 with Game Oven Studios’ Fingle. Released on Jan. 12, the game is a unique, two player finger puzzle game that requires two people to work together to solve more than 50 levels of puzzles designed to create situations where both players must intertwine their fingers. Fingle is currently the No. 14 paid iPad app and costs $0.99.

Monkey Quest: Thunderbow – Nickelodeon’s game Monkey Quest: Thunderbow takes the No. 19 spot this week after going on sale for $0.99. Tied into the online, internet based version of the game, players can play the mobile game to unlock items in the online game and import their characters from Monkeyquest.com.

Monkey Math School Sunshine – New York City-based THUP Games takes the No. 26 spot this week with its educational app Monkey Math School Sunshine. The game features nine interactive, math themed games designed to teach children between the ages of three and six basic math skills and concepts. The app was last updated on Aug. 5 and costs $0.99.

Scribblenauts Remix – Seattle-based 5th Cell’s mobile adaption of its DS franchise Scribblenauts Remix continues to preform well, holding the No. 31 spot this week on the iPad charts. The game was just updated to add 20 new levels, which are available as a $0.99 paid DLC pack.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox - Last but, not least, another monkey themed THUP Games entry fills the last spot on the paid iPad charts. This week’s No. 42 paid iPad app, Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is designed specifically for pre-schoolers and features seven mini-games designed to teach children between the ages of two and five about colors, letters, shapes and counting. The app is $0.99.
