Emerging free iOS Apps: Charadium II, OnLive Desktop and Tap Buggies

This week’s free iOS charts once again brought the most change and variety of any of our iOS roundups, showcasing several new apps. While Imangi Studios claimed the top spot on both the iPhone and iPad charts with its free-to-play hit Temple Run, new releases from Zynga, Pocket Gems, Arb Studios, OnLive and Apalon all performed well this week. This week’s top free iPhone apps Scramble With Friends Free - Zynga kicks off our free iOS charts in the No. 2 position this week with its latest With Friends title, Scramble With Friends Free. Based closely on Boggle, the game allows players to challenge one another in timed, asynchronous matches to find the most words in a set of scrambled letters. The game is free to play and monetizes through in-app purchases of tokens, which players can redeem for in-game power-ups. Read our full review here. Tap Buggies - Pocket Gems’ newest game Tap Buggies makes a strong debut near the top of the iPhone charts this week. A city building game with an insect theme, the free-to-play game includes four different areas and offers players a large variety of bugs to collect. Tap Buggies is currently the No. 4 free iPhone app and was released last week. Charadium II Free - On5 Games makes our chart in the No. 15 spot with its social Pictionary game Charadium II Free. An online multiplayer version of Pictionary, the game supports Game Center so that players to play live or turn-based games against their friends or random opponents. The game was updated on Jan. 13 to incorporate achievements, Dutch language support and rewards from goal-based advertising service Kiip. Read our full review of the game here. Spider Swiper by Mentos - This week’s No. 24 free app is something we don’t see often on the iOS charts -- a completely branded promotional app. Based on a Mentos commercial, Spider Swiper by Mentos challenges players to beat up six different spiders by swiping at them. The game is totally free and users who beat the first spider in the game get a coupon for a free roll of Mentos candy. Tiki Kart 3D - Orlando-based Arb Studios closes out the free iPhone charts this week with its new game Tiki Kart 3D. A cart racing game that bears a striking resemblance to Nintendo’s classic Mario Kart, the No. 48 ranked free app features eight karts, 15 tracks and like its inspiration, allows players to overtake their opponents by launching weapons at them or placing obstacles in their path. The game is free to play and monetizes through in-app purchases. A $3.99 in-app purchase unlocks all extra content. This Week’s top free iPad Apps Temple Run - Imangi Studios continues to reign on the iPad charts with its addictive free-to-play game Temple Run. This week’s No. 1 free iPad app (and No. 1 free iPhone app), Temple Run challenges players to escape a South American temple filled with traps, obstacles and cliffs. Players can choose from one of seven characters and can collect game center achievements. Jet Ball HD - This week’s No. 6 free iPad app is Jet Ball HD, a Breakout inspired game credited to Alexander Oreshko and codefreeze. The game is free and comes with 15 levels. Users have the option to purchase more than 130 more levels through $0.99 in-app purchases. OnLive Desktop - Video game streaming service OnLive expands its product offerings with its new app, OnLive Desktop. Using the same streaming video compression technology the company uses in its gaming applications, the app allows users to work on a cloud-based Windows desktop from their iPads, promising a lag-free experience when using Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The app is totally free and at this point does not charge for a subscription to the service. OnLive Desktop is currently the No. 10 free iPad App. Minesweeper Q for iPad - This week’s No. 11 free iPad app is Minesweeper Q for iPad, an iPad version of the classic Windows game. Credited to independent developer Spica, Minesweeper Q for iPad includes Game Center achievements and monetizes through the $1.99 in-app purchase of the premium, ad-free version of the game. Nostalgio - Finally, moving all the way down to the No. 38 position, Minsk-based Apalon’s photo app Nostalgio closes out this week’s iPad charts. Free for a limited time after re-branding as Nostalgio, the app allows users to create photo collages either by selecting pictures from their libraries or taking pictures from within the app. Nostalgio comes with a large variety of templates and users can spin, rotate and resize photos in the frames to customize the results. The app was last updated on Jan. 9.
