Users Can Give Charitable Donations Through Facebook Gifts

By Justin Lafferty

Odds are, you always have one friend who is nearly impossible to shop for when it comes to birthdays and holidays. Now, through Facebook Gifts, users can donate to a charity or nonprofit in honor of a friend. This feature, which gives users 11 different organizations from which to choose, is something that Facebook is testing.

Many users still don’t have access to Facebook Gifts, but the site is planning to gradually roll it out to more users. When you do receive Facebook Gifts, you’ll be able to buy real-life items for friends. But if you’ve got a friend who doesn’t want a teddy bear or chocolate, maybe a donation to the American Red Cross or would be more suitable.

Additionally, you can donate a set amount and let the recipient choose the charity.

Facebook announced the test of donations via Gifts in the site’s Newsroom blog:

With each charitable contribution on Facebook, you can choose which nonprofit you would like to support. Or if you don’t know which organization to choose, you can let your friend make the choice…. We hope that in addition to helping these important organizations raise funds, Facebook Gifts will also raise awareness about the thousands of nonprofits around the world.

Users can choose to donate to these 11 organizations, with more possibly to come:

  • American Red Cross
  • Blue Star Families
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of America
  • Girls Inc.
  • Kiva
  • Livestrong
  • Oxfam America
  • Rainn
  • St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital
