New York Yankees Shortstop Derek Jeter announced via a post on his Facebook page that he would retire from the sport after the upcoming 2014 season.

Jeter won World Series rings with the Yankees in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009, and he collected milestone hit No. 3,000 in July 2011, but he struggled through injuries during the 2013 season, playing in just 17 games.

Jeter said in his Facebook post:

I want to start by saying thank you.

I know they say that when you dream, you eventually wake up.
