DailyMotion & Flattr Team Up To Give Video Creators A New Way To Make Money Off Their Content

This week Flattr teamed up with DailyMotion to give video creators a new way to make money off their content.

Last year we introduced you to Flattr, the social micropayment service that lets video creators earn money for their work.  Content can creators add “Flattr” buttons to their websites or video pages that viewers using Flattr can click if they like the content.  Flattr users pay a certain amount per month and at the end of the month this money is distributed amongst the creators that they have “flattrd.”  This week Flattr teamed up with DailyMotion to give video creators a new way to make money off their content.

GigaOM’s Bobbie Johnson reports that, “Those who join the program can incorporate Flattr buttons on their pages, which allows users who are signed up to donate cash with a simple click.”  Check out the video below to find out a little more about how Flattr works.

Flattr shouldn’t be mistaken for larger crowdfunding services like Kickstarter or Indiegogo.  Rather than being used to raise money for new content or projects, Flattr is more of a way for viewers to say “thank you” to creators for producing such great content.  That being said, it’s hard not to take note that this news follows the news from two weeks ago that YouTube is now letting creators link their videos to Kickstarter and Indigogo fundraising pages.

This news is not only great for Flattr, as it is the service’s largest partnership to date, but is also sure to attract new creators to DailyMotion as well.  The video sharing site is often overlooked in favor of YouTube, but the addition of this new monetization option definitely chalks up a new ‘Pro’ in the DailyMotion column.

Christophor Rick of ReelSEO reports that Flattr Co-Founder, Linus Olsson, says, “DailyMotion enabling Flattr for its audience and Motionmakers is a great validation for our model and strongly engaged user base.  We hope this will change the way audiences think about online video, encouraging viewers to donate to the creators of content that truly entertains, informs or serves a venerable cause.”

Video creators—do you think you’ll be using the Flattr button on DailyMotion?  Viewers—would you consider opening a Flattr account to reward your favorite video creators?
