House Speaker John Boehner, Others In Congress Like Facebook Hashtags

By Jennifer Moire

Not every brand has access to Facebook hashtags yet, but one group that does — members of Congress — has taken a liking to the social network’s newest feature. Don Seymour, digital strategist for Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), talked up his use of Facebook hashtags in two posts promoting an event honoring Frederick Douglass Wednesday.

And Speaker Boehner isn’t the only one liking the hashtag. Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.) used the Flag Day hashtag last week.

Even aspiring senators are employing the Facebook feature. Here’s Massachusetts candidate Gabriel Gomez joining the conversation surrounding the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Finals.

A brief scan of the Facebook pages of a few Democrats in the House leadership didn’t reveal much, if any, hashtag use yet. The feature is perfect for the political arena. Hot-button issues such as immigration and gun control on the legislative horizon are sure to result in heated conversations on Facebook. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) posted recently about the big immigration debate this week.
