Things are about to get a lot more interesting when the clock strikes noon throughout the U.S., as social dating application and website Coffee Meets Bagel officially launched its application for the iPhone and iPod Touch Thursday, just prior to going nationwide starting next week.
Coffee Meets Bagel chooses from friends of users’ Facebook friends and sends one potential match at noon every day, via push notification and email, and users can choose whether to like or pass on those matches.
The website launched in April 2012, and it currently serves up its matches, which it refers to as bagels, in San Francisco (where it is based), New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
Coffee Meets Bagel said its bagels boast a daily open rate of 70 percent, with 50 percent of those occurring via mobile devices.
The company is marking the launch of its app by teaming up with private driving service startup Uber on the #CoffeeMeetsUber promotion, which runs through Aug. 28. Coffee Meets Bagel members who download the app and tweet about it using the hashtag #CoffeeMeetsUber will have the chance to win $100 in Uber credit and 1,000 Coffee Beans, which unlock premium services on Coffee Meets Bagel.
In addition, all Coffee Meets Bagel users who are new to Uber will receive a free first ride, up to $20, for the months of August and September.
Coffee Meets Bagel Co-Founder and CEO Arum Kang said:
Being introduced to a friend of a friend is very powerful. We’ve found that members are 37 percent more likely to mutually like each other when their match is a friend of a friend instead of a stranger. Our service never posts to a member’s Facebook page, but connecting to his or her social graph offers a modern spin on the way dating has traditionally occurred. This new app for iPhone and iPod Touch furthers that modern spin by fitting in with the way people communicate today.
Our members receive their bagels at noon every day when they are out with friends on lunch break, so it was important for us to enable our members to check their matches on the go.
