On October 29, YouTube beauty guru Brie Lybrand, aka MyRedSolara, uploaded a video to her YouTube channel that is very different than the vibrant, upbeat makeup tutorials, shopping hauls, and fashion videos she usually posts. The video, called ‘A Message To My Rapist’, is directed at Lybrand’s father and is going viral today.
Lybrand made the video after receiving an email notification that her father, Steven Bressler, subscribed to her YouTube channel. A father subscribing to his daughter’s YouTube channel wouldn’t usually signify anything out of the ordinary, but Lybrand has not seen her father since she was thirteen years old, following a nine year stretch in which he raped, molested and tortured her and her mother.
In the video, Lybrand acknowledges that this video is very different than what she usually posts but says, “I feel like it’s time and it needs to be said.” She says, “I just got an email from YouTube saying that the man that raped me for the most of my life subscribed to me. The man that took my virginity, robbed me of an innocence, has subscribed to me on YouTube and is watching my videos.”
Lybrand says she never got to testify in court, never got to tell her story and explain what it was like to be abused and raped by her father. Now, knowing that her father was watching, finally pushed her to speak out and share her horrifying story.
In the emotional 12-minute video, which has racked up just under 100,000 views so far, Lybrand finally speaks out against her father and reveals how his acts have affected her and her life. She reveals the collection of weapons that she keeps with her in the event that she ever runs into him and tells him, “Unsubscribe from my channel, now!”
In the video, Lybrand reveals just a few details about her father—his name, Steven Bressler, the fact that he lived in New Orleans, his wife’s name and the fact that he has another child. While it is assumed that Lybrand garnered the information about her father’s new life from his YouTube channel, it is not clear and no additional information is provided. One can only imagine, though, that as the video spreads the likes of Reddit, 4chan and other online communities will do their best to uncover more information about Lybrand’s father and help “bring him to justice.” We’ll keep an eye out as the story unfolds.
