Backflip Studios Revamps Classic Time Waster in Paper Toss 2.0 for iOS

Backflip Studios has established itself as a solid contender in the free-to-play space on iOS in 2011. The company has seen success this year with the likes of DragonVale and its highly polished Solitaire application. Now it's taken one of its most popular free titles, Paper Toss, and given it a makeover. Paper Toss 2.0 is a simple game that -- true to its predecessor -- lets players using a single finger to flick crumpled up balls of paper towards a waste basket in an attempt to make it in. Making things difficult is an electric fan that blows at a different speed, from a different direction, or both. Players are rewarded for making shots into the bin with paper points, which can be used to purchase new items to toss — bananas, grenades, and more — and power-ups, such as increasing the bin size or disabling the fan for a single shot. This sequel has three scenes to play in and three difficulty levels. There's a basic office cubicle, an intern who rolls back and forth in his chair holding the bin, and a warehouse isle for longer shots. Each scene contains items that can be used to bank shots for extra points, and other than can be destroyed. Players unlock achievements for performing certain trick shots, and these are reflected in Game Center, along with high scores for friends and other players around the globe. The game is monetized through in-app purchases of paper points, which can be used to buy items and power-ups. Players can also pay $0.99 to disable advertisements, which currently consist of interstitial screens promoting Backflip Studios titles. Backflip Studios was founded in 2009 and is based in Boulder, Colorado. It's privately funded, and its first title, the original Paper Toss has been downloaded more than 100 million times since launching two years ago. Paper Toss 2.0 is a universal app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It is currently ranked No. 10 on the App Store's list of top-downloaded free iPhone games, and No. 6 on the corresponding list for iPad.
