Amazon Kindle Now Available For Android Phones

This morning I made note to write a blog post speculating that July 21 was going to be the day we see Amazon's Kindle app for Android because T-Mobile's web page for the Samsung Vibrant shows that it comes with Kindle for Android. By the end of the work day Amazon announced that the Kindle app was available in the Android Market, and I was downloading it to my Nexus One. The Android version of the Kindle application is pretty much the same as the Kindle apps for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. It downloads any Kindle book that you purchased from any device and synchronizes your current location, bookmarks, and annotations. Right now the Android version does not support creating highlights and notes, but it does download the ones created on other devices. Turning pages in a book is a simple swipe left and right, or you can tap the left and right side of the screen. Tap in the middle of a page to see your current location in the book or go to other locations. The menu button displays the View, Go To, Sync, Bookmark, and Home options. The View options is where you change font sizes, background color, and display brightness. Go To options exist for table of contents, beginning, a specific location, or your notes and bookmarks. The Kindle app for Android currently does not support in app purchases, but Amazon says that will be added in a future release of the application. A Kindle Store option is available from the app's home screen that launches a web version of the Kindle store that is optimized for the Android browser. Purchases that you make will download to your Android phone, and the purchase confirmation web page includes a link that returns you to the Kindle app. The Kindle app is now the the second multi-platform eReader available for Android phones, as Kobo was released a few weeks ago. Barnes and Noble has said they are also developing a version of their eReader app for Android, and I would expect the release date of that to accelerate now that the Kindle app is available. Amazon Kindle for Android is a free app, a very good eReader on its own, and a logical download if you already use the Kindle app on any other platform.
