Super Bowl XLVII is less than a week away and, as usual, big brands are giving viewers a sneak peak of what’s to come during Sunday night’s commercial breaks. If you’re looking to get your pre-game fix of 2013 Super Bowl ads, there some great resources online to help ensure that you don’t miss that commercial that everyone will be talking about.
But before we get to our guide on where to find the hottest Super Bowl commercials of 2013, as they are released, let’s take a look at why brands have embraced this new tradition of posting their game day commercials on the web early. I mean, isn’t there something exciting about seeing an awesome commercial for the first time when it plays live during the Super Bowl? Turns out it’s all about exposure. Mashable reports that, “According to YouTube’s research, ads that ran online before the Super Bowl last year got 9 million views, in average. Those that waited? 1.3 million.”
Of course, not all big brands are dishing out the goods early. AdAge reports that Mars will not be releasing their M&Ms spot early this year. Mars Chocolate America’s chief consumer officer, Roy Benin, says, “We are continuing with what we call our surprise-and-delight approach. There’s that first-time, premier reveal [in game] that we believe is compelling.”
So if you’re all about the “surprise-and-delight” that goes along with watching Super Bowl commercials for the first time during the Super Bowl commercial breaks, feel free to click away and watch this adorable cat video instead of reading on. But if you want to be on top of the latest and greatest Super Bowl ads of the year, we’ve compiled a list of resources below.
Hulu Toyota AdZone
At hulu.com/adzone you’ll find a playlist of all of the 2013 Super Bowl ad teasers and previews. You can also browse all of the 2012 Super Bowl ads from previous years, going back to 2008.
On game day, Hulu will open things up to viewers to vote for their favorite spots as they air during the game. For the past two years, Volkswagen has taken home the gold for ‘The Bark Side’ and ‘The Force.’ This year Volkswagen has turned to disgruntled YouTubers for one of their Super Bowl preview spots. The video has racked up nearly 1 million views so far. Check it out below, as well as VW’s other “Get Happy” Super Bowl spot, and let us know if you think the brand’s latest campaign has what it takes to top the Super Bowl ad charts this year.
On a side note, according to USA Today, the folks in that second ad spent nearly four hours in an elevator while the scene was shot and re-shot “more than 100 times.” Looks like the sarcastic expressions and unhappiness on their faces may have been a little more than good acting!
Unruly’s Viral Video Chart
Unruly has begun tracking Super Bowl 2013 videos and it’s chock-full of some of the best pre-released game day commercials. Currently Taco Bell’s game day commercial teaser, ‘Grandpa Goes Wild’, is getting lots o’ love on the Viral Video Chart.
YouTube AdBlitz actually won’t be compiling their collection of Super Bowl commercials until game day, but we wanted to include it here anyway, as it’s a great pre-game resource for playoff coverage (or post-coverage, I guess), party recipes, game predictions, tailgating tales and more.
And now that you know where to get your fix of game day commercials, here are a few more of the ads that are currently getting the most play on YouTube and beyond. Enjoy!
