Veteran TIME political reporter and D.C. Bureau Chief Jay Carney will be Vice President Joe Biden’s Director of Communications.

The memo of Carney’s departure got out before he was named to the post. According to an unnamed source in Politico, the selection “was an interesting idea and worth the risk” and answered the begged question of choosing a journalist: “There are those on the right who will see this as the embodiment of their assertions about the media and Obama, and this is just making it official.”
