If you’re on social media, then you’ve seen the promos for tonight’s mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead. Their Twitter feed has been lit up with reminders and suggestions for days. So has the Instagram page, which is also promoting a Twitter chat with Norman Reedus* (aka Daryl Dixon) at 8:30pm ET tonight, a half hour before the premiere starts. Five cast members appeared on Conan this week. And, of course, the Facebook page is wall-to-wall walkers.
There are games and quizzes on the website to get fans involved. One such game scientifically determined that I would make it at least a year and a half if zombies took over. And the show was brought to life on the streets of New York when zombies scared the mess out of people walking in Union Square by grasping at feet from beneath the sidewalk.
But officials saw footage of the stunt and now an MTA spokesperson says they’ve turned it over to the NYPD. Doesn’t the MTA know! There are no laws in the zombie apocalypse!
Certainly, the NYPD has better things to do. And AMC is probably happy for any little boost they can get in viewership for the show tonight. If there’s a fine, they’ll likely pay it gladly.
While the premiere managed to avoid the Super Bowl last week, it is competing with the Winter Olympics in Sochi and Downton Abbey. So while The Walking Dead is the most popular show on television, particularly among that coveted 18-to-49 age demographic, they’re not taking any chances.
It’s worth noting that Sochi’s opening ceremony wasn’t a ratings bonanza, with the numbers for the Matt Lauer/Meredith Vieira hosted broadcast falling eight percent from the Vancouver Olympics in 2010.
Still, AMC is wise to make a big to-do about its biggest show. Television is crowded right now, what with Netflix, Amazon, and other companies getting in on the action. And Sunday nights in particular are a tough place to stand out. But safe to say there’s nothing on TV right now that looks like The Walking Dead. I’m not sure how much of this magnificent** zombie madness we could take anyway.
